Explanation: The Nile in Egypt was the center of Egyptian civilization, and is a remarkably stable river in most matters.

The Yellow River in China, likewise, was central in the foundation of Chinese civilization. It, however, is most certainly not a stable or predictable river, having numerous instances in Chinese history where its tempestuous behavior endangered or even toppled dynasties - or any number of times the Yellow River just straight-up decided to change course because it fucking felt like it.

There's a shipwreck in the middle of a cornfield somewhere in the USA because the missississipppi River completely changed course. It's also straight up moved from one side of a town to the other.

I believe the army core of engineers is often doing maintenance on the Mississippi. The river wants to empty out farther to the east and completely bypass new orleans, which would be disasterous because of how much transport and logistics infrastructure is based around the current configuration.

A lot of time and money goes into telling the Mississippi to "Stay!" so we don't have to rebuild possibly our most important transport corridor.

Yeah, there's a dam that lets a certain amount of water flow that way, but left to it's own devices it would bypass new Orleans and take a different path to the sea.

Some tempestuous-ass rivers we live with on this planet

Sometimes people would try to dig channels and divert the Mississippi to a new course to give themselves valuable waterfront property

That sounds like playing with fire to me.

It was. It often didn’t work the way they expected, and even if it did the towns that were suddenly dry would try to take it back.

That's what the song is about

"Yellowntover, yellow river
it's in my eyes and in my ears..."
